How Prayer Times Are Calculated: The Astronomy Behind Fajr to Isha
A plain-language explanation of how the five daily prayer times are worked out from the sun's position, and why they change through the year and from city to city.
Read the guide →This page gives the prayer times for Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: Fajr, Sunrise, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib and Isha for today, plus a full monthly timetable. The times are calculated from Riyadh's coordinates (24.71° N, 46.68° E) and local time zone (Asia/Riyadh), so they follow the sun and adjust automatically when clocks change.
Method: Umm al-Qura University, Makkah · Standard Asr. Times are in Riyadh local time.

Saudi Arabia is set to the Umm al-Qura method by default on this site because it is widely used in the region. Every method gives the same Dhuhr, Maghrib and Sunrise (apart from small fixed adjustments); they differ mainly in how early Fajr starts and how late Isha begins. If your local mosque or religious authority publishes its own timetable, choose the matching method in the Options box or follow the mosque's timetable for congregational prayers.
Riyadh does not change its clocks during the year (UTC+3), so prayer times move only with the sun.
They are shown at the top of this page. They are calculated for Riyadh's coordinates and its time zone (Asia/Riyadh), and the page refreshes them automatically every day, so you always see the current date.
By default this page uses the Umm al-Qura University, Makkah method (Fajr at 18.5°, Isha 90 minutes after Maghrib), which is the usual choice for Saudi Arabia. You can change the method in the Options box above if your local authority or mosque uses another one.
The default here is the Standard (Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali) calculation, where Asr begins when an object's shadow equals its length (plus the noon shadow). Use the Options box to switch to Hanafi Asr, which begins later.
Riyadh does not change its clocks during the year (UTC+3), so prayer times move only with the sun.
The Qibla from Riyadh is about 244° clockwise from true north (WSW), roughly 791 km along the great circle to the Kaaba in Makkah. A compass shows magnetic north, which differs slightly from true north, so check your local magnetic declination.
These times are calculated from astronomy and are a reliable guide, but many mosques publish their own adhan and iqamah times, sometimes with fixed adjustments. If your mosque publishes a timetable, follow it for congregational prayers.
